The Assam government has decided to give a cash reward of Rs 25,000 to each participant for their contribution to a historic cultural event celebrating 200 years of the tea sector in Assam.
The announcement comes ahead of the grand Jhumoir Binandini programme, scheduled for February 24 at Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati.
Over 8,000 young people from the tea tribe community of the state will take part in the world’s largest Jhumoir dance, a traditional dance that is an significant part of their community’s heritage.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on social media platform X, emphasizing the cultural significance of the Jhumoir performance.
“The weight of history is on their shoulders,” the Chief Minister stated. “For a long time, Assam’s tea community has been trapped in poverty and neglect. We want to end this and celebrate their glorious culture in a way not seen before,” he added.
