Expert Committee Submits Its Report To Assam CM On Legislative Competence To Ban Polygamy

The expert committee, formed by Government of Assam to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to ban polygamy submitted its report on August 6.

Expert Committee Submits Report On Assam’s Legislative Competence

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared pictures of the committee handing over the report to him and the cover of the document on Twitter. “Today, the expert committee formed to examine the legislative competence of the state legislature to enact a law to end polygamy in Assam submitted its report. Assam is now closer to creating a positive ecosystem for women’s empowerment irrespective of caste, creed or religion,” the Chief Minister said.

Under the chairmanship of retired Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, the committee was constituted in May. The other members were Advocate General of Assam Government, Debojit Saikia, Additional Advocate General of Assam Government, Nalin Kohli, and Nekibur Zaman, senior advocate of Gauhati High Court.

Sarma thanked the committee for its timely and comprehensive report. He further said that it would help the government in framing a law to end polygamy in the state.
