Assam: State Government To Re-Launch Drive Against Child Marriage In September

The Government of Assam is going to re-launch the drive against child marriage across the state in September.

Child Marriage Threatens Lives, Well-Being And Futures Of Girls

While addressing the 4th SP (Superintendent of Police) conference at Bongaigaon, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma disclosed another operation against the social menace.

The Chief Minister asked the state police force to prepare specific operating procedures to deal with various social evils including ‘love jihad’.

The state police picked up over 3000 individuals following 4235 registered complaints during a major crackdown in February.

Pointing out that the child marriage is banned in India for nearly a century since it threatens the lives, well-being and futures of the girls, the Chief Minister announced that the drive against all social menaces will continue till 2026.

It may be mentioned that data from the National Family Health Survey reflects that the state continues to record a higher number of child marriage as well as teenage pregnancy than the national average.
