Manipur: Governor’s Decision To Exclude MLAs From Kuki Community From Relief Camps Oversight Teams Sparks Criticism

Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey has constituted seven teams to oversee the management of relief camps set up for people affected by the ethnic violence in the state.

2 Ministers, 8 MLAs From Kuki Community Not Included In Relief Camps Oversight Teams

The teams consist of all the council of ministers of the N Biren Singh-led government in Manipur. However, two ministers and eight MLAs from the Kuki community were not included in the teams.

The Kuki community has demanded a separate administration, stating that the Government of Manipur  “miserably failed to protect” the Chin-Kuki-Zomi tribals.

The Governor’s decision to exclude Kuki MLAs from the relief camps oversight teams has been met with criticism from some quarters. Meanwhile, Uikey has defended her decision, stating that she is simply trying to ensure that the relief camps are run in a fair and impartial manner.

The clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities broke out on May 3. The Governer has urged the elected representatives of Manipur to make relentless efforts to bring peace through an amicable dialogue. Further, she has appealed to all sections of society to help restore peace and normalcy to the state.
