The arrested railway employees have been identified as senior section engineer Arun Kumar Mahanta, section engineer Mohammad Amir Khan and technician Pappu Kumar.

Reportedly, the three employees have been charged with the culpable homicide not amounting to murder since they had knowledge that their results might result in this tragedy.

The CBI had officially taken over the probe into Odisha’s Balasore train crash on June 6. The crash on June 2 involving two passenger trains and a goods train killed nearly 300 people and injured more than 1,100, while the movement of goods and passenger trains on the busy route was also disrupted.

The central probe agency has not detailed the precise role played by the three accused employees but a senior officer said the three were arrested for “their action which led to the incident”. CBI probe is looking into any “attempt”, “abetment” and/or “conspiracy” behind the incident.
