Bihar: Under-Construction Bridge Over Mechi River Collapsed

It has come to light that another bridge has collapsed in Bihar. This is the 11th bridge collapse in Bihar over the past three years.

Due to this incident, the traffic on the Kishanganj-Siliguri-Araria route has come to a standstill. A span of a 100-meter under-construction bridge over Mechi River on a 94-long stretch on NH-327 E between Galgaliya in Kishanganj and Araria collapsed at Gorichak in Bihar’s Kishanganj on June 23.

The superstructure was erected in May and the bridge is not yet in operation. Reportedly, there is no casualty or injuries to any construction workers.

There is sudden rise of water flow from Nepal in Mechi River on which this bridge is constructed. The entire river was channelized through the P2-P3-P4 spans during the construction activity.

Team of NHAI officers, the Concessionaire and Independent Engineer reached at site to probe the collapse. Meanwhile, Team Leader & Bridge Engineer of Independent Engineer, M/s Chaitanya Project Consultancy Pvt. Ltd. and Sr. Project Manager & Dy. Project Manager (Structure) of Concessionaire, M/s GR Galgalia Bahadurganj Highway Private Limited have been suspended with immediate effect to avoid any influence on the ongoing investigation.

It may be mentioned that a 3.16 km-long, four-lane bridge over the river Ganga connecting north and south Bihar, built between Sultanganj in Bhagalpur and Aguwani in Khagaria district collapsed on June 4.
