The city recorded its best air quality in eight years on Diwali day, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 218.

However, widespread firecracker usage led to a rise in pollution levels and the onset of smog towards the evening

The Delhi Pollution Control Board (DPCC) said that the city saw a sharp spike in pollution levels after the bursting of firecrackers.

“The bursting of firecrackers has increased pollution levels in Delhi. Not many people have burst firecrackers, but it was done in some places in a targeted manner. The way BJP leaders were inciting people, its result can be seen today,” Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said.
