The Manipur High Court on August 3 directed that the status quo be maintained on the land in dispute between the Meitei community and Kuki community.

This order came in response to a petition filed by the International Meitei Forum, which sought to prevent the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) from conducting a mass burial at the site.

It urged the Central and State governments to come up with “amicable settlements” in the matter to control the law and order situation in the area.

The court remarked that the interim order was necessary into account “the potentiality of aggravating the already volatile law and order situation and the possibility of igniting a fresh wave of violence and bloodshed due to the gathering of a large mob from both the communities at the land in question”.

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs appealed to the ITLF to postpone the ceremony of the last rites of mortal remains of those killed in ethnic violence in Manipur to a later date.
