Tomato Prices Likely To Fall

In response to a query in Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution, Ashwini Kumar Choubey attributed the rise in tomato prices to lower production during the kharif season and heightened demand observed during the festive period.

“Prices of tomato are expected to come down with the increase in the arrival of new crop from Nashik, Naryangaon and Aurangabad belt in Maharashtra and also from Madhya Pradesh. Current increase in tomato prices may incentivize farmers to grow more tomato crop which is expected to stabilize the prices in coming months,” the Minister said.

The government has implemented a comprehensive monitoring mechanism to keep a close eye on the prices and availability of essential commodities, including tomatoes. In addition, the government has taken proactive steps to facilitate the import of tomatoes and onions from other countries.
