Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that his government plans to introduce a new law criminalizing ‘love jihad’, with penalties including life imprisonment for those convicted.

This announcement was made during an extended session of the Assam BJP’s state executive meeting in Guwahati.
Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “We will soon bring a law imposing life imprisonment for those involved in ‘love jihad’.”
“We are committed to securing the rights of Assamese people step by step, regardless of opposition efforts,” he added.
The Chief Minister informed that the proposed legislation will be introduced during the forthcoming monsoon session of the Assam assembly later this month.
