India on Wednesday summoned the acting deputy chief of mission of the US embassy in New Delhi regarding remarks made by the United States concerning the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The US state department had stated that the United States is closely monitoring reports of the Delhi CM’s arrest and advocates for a fair legal process.

This statement from the US state department came after Germany’s response to the case prompted a diplomatic protest from India.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 22 on corruption allegations, which his party – the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) – has refuted. This arrest occurred just a month before the Lok Sabha polls.

Responding to an inquiry about the case, the US state department spokesperson emphasized, “We support a fair, transparent and expeditious legal process for Chief Minister Kejriwal.”
