Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 11 informed that an expert committee on polygamy will be formed to explore the legal aspects.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had announced that the state government intends to ban polygamy as a component of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
He highlighted that the ban is not aimed at any particular community, but rather against the practice of polygamy itself. The government seeks to achieve this through consensus and not through force or aggression.
At a press conference held in Guwahati to commemorate the second anniversary of the state government, the Chief Minister announced that the committee will work towards the goal of banning polygamy.
Meanwhile, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal said that CM Sarma is selectively targeting the Muslim men and interfering with their religious practices and he has no rights to do that.
